The European Union wants possible an end to government support for game developers. The giving of state aid is prohibited in the EU, but game developers were given an exception. The deadline for the scheme expires, however.

The EU prohibits state aid to unfair competition between member states, but for some sectors, such as the film industry, an exception will be made. In 2007, game developers such exception for five years, but who is going this year so it expired and a renewal is uncertain.
