AU Optronics is looking for the connection to Samsung and LG with regards to the production of oled displays and has a strategic alliance with Idemitsu Kosan, supplier of organic materials for oled screens.
AU Optronics has been for several years engaged in oled development and is also already a number of smaller oled display’s, but has large-scale production has yet taken. That is going to change in the future with the announced collaboration between AU Optronics and Idemitsu.
The latter will include raw materials for the production of oled displays supply and the necessary technical knowledge. Also will the two companies work together with regard to the taking and collecting of oled patents. Initially, collaboration will focus on the market for mobile phones and tablets, but they also have oled panels for tv’s on the agenda.
According to Oled-Info will AU Optronics in the second half of 2012 starting with the mass production of 4″- to 5″-oled screens for smartphones in the 3.5 G plant in Hsinchu in Taiwan. It uses ltps-tft to the oled-backplane, while the organic material opgedampt. In the second half of 2013, a new 4.5 G production line, based on ltps technology in Singapore online.
However, the firm is also doing a cheap production process based on oxide-tft. As demonstrated in the oem paneelfabrikant from Taiwan at CES 2012, including a prototype of a 32″oled tv with that technology would produce. This tv has a thickness of only 9.2 mm.
Idemitsu Kosan has in 2009 already has a similar alliance with LG Display, a major competitor of AU Optronics. Idemitsu in June 2010, an interest of 32% in LG’s Global Oled Technology, a subsidiary of LG which will include the oled patents, which Kodak acquired has, manages.
