UPC promises this year to roll-out ipv6

As well as Ziggo, UPC plans to continue this year, ipv6 addresses to new subscribers to provide. The company expects at the end of this year, namely by its ipv4 addresses to go to, which means that new users, a new address will have to get.

That report UPC-spokesman Ronald Sutmuller do so Tweakers.net. “It will be in the course of this year are going to happen, but when that time is, is still unclear,” he says. “We currently have sufficient ipv4 addresses.” In 2011, said the provider until the end of 2012 enough ipv4 addresses to have. That number is correct according to Sutmuller still, or ‘broadly’.

Ipv6-UPC is mainly intended for new customers to connect, says Sutmuller. Existing customers will be involved in the introduction of ipv6 is not immediately an ipv6 address. Or she, on request, be able to get, such as when Ziggo is the case, know Sutmuller not yet. “But our customers just need to stay connected,” says Sutmuller, in which he indicates that when more and more users of the internet and websites only accessible via ipv6, also UPC customers an ipv6 address.

In 2011, said Sutmuller against Tweakers.net that the company was already planning for that year, ipv6 to enter. According to the spokesman revealed that are subsequently not required. “The introduction of ipv6 is not a race”, says Sutmuller. “Ipv6 is needed by us at the moment that the ipv4 addresses are.”

If those addresses actually are, will UPC customers can still go to websites with only an ipv4 address can surf. Sutmuller, however, may not indicate which technical solution is used. He assumes that the roll-out of ipv6 ‘spotless’. The network of UPC is in any case suitable for the roll-out, he promises.

Competitor Ziggo confirmed Thursday morning across Tweakers.net that the ipv6 connections to deliver. Or KPN, the same plan is, is unclear: one succeeded, despite repeated attempts not to be a substantive answer to formulate. Previously gave the provider the roll out to be busy. KPN-daughter Xs4all gives customers moreover, since 2010, ipv6 addresses.

The biggest difference between ipv4 and ipv6 is the number of available ip addresses. Where there are approximately 4.3 billion ipv4 addresses are ipv6 addresses are significantly higher. There are close to the 3.4×1038 combinations, which equates to a whopping 340 sextiljoen ip addresses. That means that every person on earth is a lot more ipv6 addresses available than the total number of ipv4 addresses. A major disadvantage is that ipv4 – and ipv6 packets are not compatible; therefore, it is necessary that the whole internet will switch to the new protocol.
