Intel acquires Infiniband in

Intel has a share of QLogic, the company behind netwerkinterconnect InfiniBand, incorporated. A significant portion of QLogic is now in the hands of Intel, that the communication standard to be netwerkportfolio add.

The InfiniBand standard is mainly in supercomputers and other hpc applications and allows for serial connections between processors with more storage devices. The speed of an InfiniBand interconnect amounts 2Gbps up to 300Gbps. The acquisition of the industry of QLogic, responsible for InfiniBand fits into Intel’s so-called exascale strategy.

The company aims, by 2018 exascale calculations in supercomputers. That is still an order of magnitude less with terascale calculations, either single teraflops. The InfiniBand interconnects are often used to hold large amounts of data from and to the storage arrays to send. With the agreement, this quarter must be finished, an amount of 125 million dollars is involved; employees of QLogic will probably be when Intel incorporated.
