The European Parliament has a proposal for a directive in the field of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE, to tighten approved. Member states need to be much more e-waste collect.
The current directive for waste electrical and equipment write states that approximately 4 kilos of electronic waste per person collected. This would be a total of about 2 million tons represent, on a quantity of 10 million tonnes of e-waste in the EU is generated.
The amendment sets the goal for 2020 is 10 million tonnes, or 20 kilos per person. In 2016, member states should be 45 percent of the total amount of electronic and electrical devices that then come on to the market, collect and when 2020 comes into view, must be either 65 percent or 85 percent.
The directive does not prescribe what states should do to achieve this. The current WEEE directive 2002/96/EC has for free collection of e-waste taken care of. In the Netherlands we thank the environmental contribution to the plan. To prevent illegal export of e-waste to tackle, exporters will soon be required documents to provide with details about the shipment, in case of a suspicion of e-waste exports.
