EU reveals likely Wednesday new privacy rules

This week will probably be the new European privacy rules will be presented. The rules go further than existing privacy policies. This gives users more rights and companies need higher pay fines for violations.

It is likely that the new privacy directive on Wednesday presented, writes Reuters. According to european Commissioner Viviane Reding, it is necessary for the privacy practices, to simplify, because the rules between EU member states differ and sometimes even conflict. “We have too many rules and contradictory rules,” she said, according to Reuters.

That fragmentation in privacy rules would be companies 2.3 billion euros per year, the Commissioner. She grabs the harmonisation of privacy rules immediately to take the measures a lot tougher to make. Reuters says to have a concept of the new directive, which inter alia provides for a ‘right to be forgotten’. Companies must ensure that information of users is removed.

Also, users will get according to the new directive, the right to access their data to export, so that other businesses can be imported. Companies can result in significant fines, up to 1 percent of their annual turnover, expect if they do not comply with the stricter rules.

In december knew a British newspaper though to seize on a concept of the new privacy directive, which at that time still provided for fines of up to 5 percent of the annual turnover. The directive would, according to this concept, companies also require prior consent for the processing of personal data; in many cases, it would be opt-in than required. That may mean that web sites advance permission to ask for gedragsprofilering to apply. That often happens to personalized ads to view.

If the new privacy rules to be implemented, after being approved by the EU member states, it will still take until 2014 or 2015 before they actually have consequences.
