The open-source web server nginx is now used more often than Microsoft’s IIS software, when it comes to active websites. When one looks at all hostnames IIS even more. The most popular server Apache.
It is the first time that nginx with active hostnames is more commonly used than Microsoft’s web server software. The market share of nginx that took this year by 0.6 percent to 12.2 percent, according to figures from web analyst NetCraft. Under active websites understands NetCraft sites that have actually unique content is published, and therefore no placeholders.
Nginx is a light web server which is especially suitable for the serving of static content, although there is also support for dynamic content. The server can also function as a loadbalancer, streaming server or a proxy server.
Apache remains in the lead, with a market share of 57.9 percent among active web sites. Although the number of hosts with Apache grew, the market share by 0.3 percent. Also, the market share of active web servers with Google software such as Google Search, YouTube and BlogSpot takes light.
When one looks at a million popular websites, is Microsoft’s market share with 15 percent, still substantially larger than nginx, with 8.5 percent. However, Microsoft’s market share is approximately equal, while that of nginx is still rising. Also among popular sites is the Apache web server lord and master, just as the market share among all sites.
NetCraft describes it in his analysis only the producers of web server software. With Microsoft it can be assumed that this refers to its IIS web server software, while the to Apache to Apache-httpd-server. Google also has its own web server software designed, but used only internally.
In total, there were nearly 583 million web hosts, according to NetCraft. The organization bases its calculations due to all the hostnames that it knows once a month a http-request to do, with as goal to get behind the used web server software and operating system.
