KPN and education-isp SURFnet started with the construction of a 4g network on the Utrecht Science Park, the site of the University of Utrecht and UMC. The network on the basis of lte serves as a test to see if 4g the wi-fi network can relieve.
The lte network will be available next year, says SURFnet. That happens with one or more partners that now are not known. KPN wants to use the trial to gain experience with 4g in combination with existing wi-fi networks. The trial in Utrecht originates from a cooperation between KPN and SURFnet, in October, that the world was created.
The 4g masts are required to work with existing wi-fi network and more provide cover. Therefore, students can also continue to work outside the buildings. Also need 4g for the task of wi-fi partly over it. It should involve users as much as possible, able to seamlessly switch between wi-fi and 4g. It is still unclear how this technically is implemented. The lte network is built on the basis of the 2.6 GHz frequency. KPN obtained a license therefor in the frequentieveiling of last spring.
Lte is a mobile network technology that much higher speeds than is now customary, but although the technology in for example the United States already in the practice is used, it is in the Netherlands still has no lte network off the ground. However, there are tests performed.
