American teenagers in the past year less go sms. This is the conclusion of research firm Nielsen after research. Where an average teenager last year 3729 messages per month are exchanged, now it’s dropped to 3417 messages.

Nielsen gives no explanation for the decrease of the number of text messages among teenagers in the age group of 13 to 17 years of age, but presumably it is because of the increased number of smartphones. With smartphones is the exchange of messages in many more ways, such as through Facebook, Google Talk, iMessage and WhatsApp.

The number of messages, both sms as mms, that Americans in the age group of 18 to 34 year exchanged, increased. Where the average American of that age, according to Nielsen, last year, 2518 messages per month are exchanged, this is now increased to 2842. Also 55+-ers exchanged more messages: 231 per month.

The huge number of sms per month is mainly due to the combination of available devices, and subscriptions. Many American teenagers had, until recently, only on old models of phones, allowing you to not much more you can do than call and text. Because many subscriptions unlimited sms is included, replace sms for many Americans chat programs; both options are free.

In the Netherlands there is a different. Bundles, thousands of text messages only came in this year widely available at major carriers. Had WhatsApp for a lot of users the feature of sms acquired. According to KPN director Eelco Blok used to Hi almost every customer with a smartphone WhatsApp.
