Researchers develop quantumfotonische chip

Researchers have an optical chip developed that could serve as an important building block for a quantum computer. With the chip can quantumtoestanden of photons easily be manipulated.

The chip was developed by the researchers of the Centre for Quantum Photonics at the Uk’s university of Bristol. With the quantumfotonische chip, it is possible for the first time to the entangled photons on a piece of silicon to generate, manipulate and measure, so claim the researchers. The chip is the result of six years of work on quantum photonics and is a much more complex than previous chips. According to principal investigator Peter Shadbolt is the latest version ten times as advanced.

The biggest advantage of the chip, in addition to the fact that it has a complete test platform is the flexibility. Thanks to eight adjustable electrodes that are in the 70 millimeter long and 3 millimeter wide chip, various experiments are carried out with the same chip. The phases of the photons can be varied by using the electrodes, which by means of tension be sent. The researchers are working on more complex versions and with the chip is an important building block for quantumcomputers in your hands.
