Martin Scorsese and Gidon Kremer are world-renowned artists in their field and were honored for their life’s work: The Goethe-Institut President Klaus-Dieter Lehmann announced on Tuesday in Berlin in the name of the Japanese Art Association. The Japanese art Association donates each year to the price, which is under the patronage of the Japanese Royal house. A further prize winner, the American artist Cindy Sherman, the French installation artist Annette Messager, and the Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha.

One of the award winners: the violin virtuoso Gidon Kremer

The award is considered one of the world’s most important art prizes with a prize money of 15 million Yen, equivalent to around 130,000 Euro. It was founded in 1989 at the suggestion of the Japanese Imperial family to the memory of Prince Takamatsu of the Japan art Association (Japanese Art Association) and is understood as the “Nobel prize of the arts”. Special benefits are awarded in five divisions: painting, music, sculpture, architecture, and Film/theatre.

Prize-winner, among others, Pina Bausch, Oscar Niemeyer, Gerhard Richter and Daniel Barenboim. In 2015, the German sculptor and conceptual artist Wolfgang Laib was awarded the Praemium Imperiale.
