Microsoft has released the fifth version of its framework for internet applications Silverlight released. The most important innovation in Silverlight 5 is support for hardware accelerated playback of h.264-videos.
Silverlight 5 can also playback 3d images via the gpu smoothly. New is also the support of a remote control in combination with applications. Further, developers can make their creations easier testing using Visual Studio 2010 and data-binding expressions better gedebugd be in a Silverlight application by placing breakpoints. Finally, the ‘Trusted Application’model extended to the browser so that the users browser does not have to leave, for example, the support for multiple windows, says the Silverlight team.
Earlier there were rumors that this will be the last version of Silverlight might be. Silverlight would only still promoted as ontwikkelruntime for Windows Phone 7, and Microsoft would be focusing more on html5 target for rich internet applications. Microsoft supports version 5 until 2021. Nothing is known about the survival of Silverlight.
