‘Lte-standard global roaming, harder’

Although a few years all the major telecom providers lte, smartphones and tablets will probably not be used worldwide. Providers would need to a lot of different frequencies to handle.

Providers go for the new network technology, lte, as a lot of different bands use, that it is for hardwaremakers difficult devices to make that world work. That predicts Wireless Intelligence. No single frequency band would be more than one in six telcos to be used; that is, some frequencies are even by just a few providers. The analistenbureau based on information about frequentieveilingen and of providers themselves to make predictions about the future of lte.

In 2015 will be about 200 lte networks are functional in around 70 countries, thinks WI. The 700MHz band, which in the Netherlands is used for digital tv of KPN’s Digitenne via dvb-t, will be the most used. Among the U.s. providers Verizon Wireless and AT&T use this band for lte. About 13 percent will use the 2100MHz band. That is in the Netherlands, now used for umts, but is opened up for lte.

Only one in nine providers will use the 2.6 GHz band for lte. That is the band that lte is up for auction. Both the existing telco’s own network – KPN, Vodafone and T-Mobile – as new entrants, Tele2 and the kabelaarcombinatie UPC/Ziggo have a license for that frequency band. According to the providers is the 2.6 GHz frequency, however, is too high for a network that is nationwide. That would be a lot more masts require than the current networks. In addition, there would be within buildings is far lesser coverage than with lower frequencies is the case, think the telco’s.

The fragmentation of lte networks has to do with which frequencies in certain countries to be opened up for use with lte. Some countries block the issuance of certain frequencies, because they are used for analog or digital tv or military applications. The consequence of this is that it’s difficult for hardwaremakers, such as manufacturers of smartphones and tablets, devices to make that world work. When mobile phones have already existed for models with quadband antennas, but to 3g devices worldwide, is a pentaband antenna is needed. Various Nokia’s, such as the N8 and N9 will have this antenna.
