Hilversum math gets a ribbon for examination of prime numbers

The Mathematician Herman te Riele is Friday, an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau for his scientific research into prime numbers and cryptography at the Centre for Mathematics and computer science. He was, among others, the RSA-155 code.

Te Riele doing since 1971 research into prime numbers and cryptography at CWI in Amsterdam, reported the organization itself. One of the major achievements of the mathematician was the rebuttal of the presumption of Mertens from 1897. By the refutation of Te Riele and Andrew Odlyzko in 1985, it became clear that the presumption could not be used to the Riemann hypothesis to prove. This hypothesis is one of the seven important unsolved problems in mathematics.

The math has also gained fame with his work on the cracking of the RSA-155 code of 512bit, in 1999. Te Riele led the team that the code successfully factoring in prime numbers. Also, RSA-140, 463bit, the team went on earlier that year successfully body. After a working life of 41 years at the CWI, that used to be the Mathematical Centre was called, he at 1 January 2012 retirement. Te Riele got the ribbon Friday presented by mayor Pieter Broertjes of Hilversum, the residence of Te Riele.
