Qualcomm has five new system-on-a-chips was announced in the Snapdragon line. The five new processors are mainly intended for smartphones and instead of on the Scorpion core is on the newer Krait-core based.
Three of the five new processors are designed for smartphones, two for tablets, is evident from the naming of Qualcomm. The processors with the designation MSM have built-in support for 2g, 3g and possibly 4g. The APQ-processors have no support for mobile networks.
The MSM8260A is the successor of the MMS8260 from the HTC Sensation and Sensation XE. It contains two cpu cores based on the Krait core. The built-in gpu is an Adreno 225, a small improvement compared to the Adreno 220 in MSM8260. The soc also includes dualchannel memory. The MSM8260A will run at 1.5 to 1.7 GHz, reports Anandtech. The MSM8260A and variant MSM8660A are identical to the MSM8960, with as only difference that the 8960de 4g technology lte supports.
Qualcomm also comes with the MSM8230/MSM8630/MSM8930, with two processor cores on the 1.2 GHz run. Although the soc by his singlechannel memory and name may could be seen as a cheaper variant, it builds Qualcomm therein, however, the Adreno 305 gpu, which for a considerable graphical improvement over the Adreno 220 and 225. The soc will therefore be later on the market: he is not expected before the second half of 2012. The MSM8227 is a dualcore soc with a maximum clock speed of 1GHz and singlechannel memory. The gpu is unknown, though it is presumably an Adreno 225. All new soc’s to be baked on 28nm. The cores in the new soc’s can separate their voltage and clock speed setting to conserve power.
Qualcomm announced its Krait-core as a replacement for the Scorpion in Snapdragons in February of this year. Many manufacturers used this year for their smartphones and tablets with a Qualcomm soc. All HTC smartphones and tablets, all Sony Ericsson Android phones and all the new BlackBerry’s are equipped with Qualcomm processors. Also Microsoft provides only drivers for Qualcomm socs with Windows Phone, which all announced Windows Phone devices run on Qualcomm soc’s.
