New e-reader features Mirasol display and Snapdragon soc

The Korean bookstore Kyobo has, together with Qualcomm this week in Korea, the Kyobo eReader is released. The device makes use of a Mirasol display, that no backlight is used, but color and video shows.

Kyobo has the device simply Kyobo eReader baptized, reports the Korea Herald. The e-reader has a 5.7″screen with a resolution of 1024×768 pixels. Unlike other e-readers with e-ink panels used the Kyobo eReader at a screen that on the Mirasol technology from Qualcomm is based. This has just as the e-ink screens have no backlight and therefore uses little power compared to lcd’s.

What the Mirasol technology apart from the competition is the ability to use colors and the video display. Most e-ink screens display only shades of gray again and the refresh is too slow for good moving picture show.

The device runs on a customized version of Android 2.3 and is powered by a Snapdragon soc from Qualcomm.

The digital store of Kyobo currently contains 93.000 books and for the end of this year should be the limit of 100,000 titles. The eReader is the first in Korea to be released, but according to Kyobo and Qualcomm also to other countries. Or the Netherlands also belongs to, is not yet known. In Korea, the cost of the eReader 349.000 won, which translated to about 225 euro.
