VVD wants to remotely readable chip on plate

Government party VVD wants that the number plates of cars chips that can remotely be read. The chips have to avoid fraud. It is unclear what the consequences would be for privacy of automoblisten.

According to VVD Mp Charlie Aptroot can chips on number plates to prevent criminals themselves as other road users occur. The chips would be unusable should be once they are out of a car to be removed, says the VVD against The guardian.

“The chip must be on tens of meters away to read,” says Aptroot against Tweakers.net. “The problem is that number plates are easy to make. By a unique chip to add, we solve a large problem.” According to Aptroot going to be a ‘miljoenenschade’ benzinepomphouders, who robbed motorists with a false number plate. “It also happens a lot with motorcycles and scooters.” That could also be a chip.

The Mp says that the reading of the chips is cheaper than the scanning of the badges using a camera: it would be around 2000 euro per scanner, against 25,000 for an ‘old-fashioned’ kentekenlezer. Ultimately the optical readers a whole can be replaced, thinks the Mp. A license plate would be a few euro more expensive with the chip.

Among others benzinepomphouders and police-agents of the chips must be able to read, so that someone who is driving too fast or petrol stealing no fraud could commit. The government has told the newspaper indicated the use of chips to take in a survey of license plates that are more resistant against theft. Currently, would therefore all tests are done.

The Mp does not think that the privacy is compromised. “We check all badges, but we go with these chips do in a better way.” The chips make it easier for users to track. That while the police now and receive criticism to the less extensive scanning of number plates. That makes the police to check whether road users, for example, outstanding fines. Remotely readable chips would make it possible to road users, over longer distances, to follow.

Aptroot says the plan in the responsible minister. The ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment examines all of the possibility of chips in number plates to do. The results of the research would be the end of this year should be known.
