Samsung and Imagination Technologies have signed a licence agreement with the South Korean company is the PowerVR SGX MP gpus in its soc’s may use. Samsung has also licensed the Mali-gpus from ARM.
The announcement is somewhat surprising because ARM almost simultaneously announced that Samsung, the Mali T658 gpu in its upcoming soc’s are going to use. Thus, it is plausible that Samsung in the future, more than one self-developed processor simultaneously will use for its smartphones. Currently is developing Samsung for every generation of smartphones and tablets one new chip.
The PowerVR SGX MP-design is already in use by several other manufacturers licensed. Apple’s A5 soc from the iPhone 4S and iPad2 makes use of it and also the new Playstation Vita used the design from Imagination Technologies.
However, it is not the first time that Samsung has a gpu design from Imagination Technologies; in Hummingbird-soc, which include the Galaxy S drives, there is a PowerVR SGX540 gpu. In his current high-end soc, the Exynos 4210 – the Samsung uses a Mali-gpu designed by ARM.
