More and more people are a victim of fraud with online banking. In the first half of 2011, there were almost 75 percent more victims than in the whole of 2010. Although they are, on average, less money lost, increased the total damage.
In the first half of 2011 were in the Netherlands 2418 bank customers victim of fraud with online banking. In the whole of 2010 were still ‘only’ 1383 customers to the victim; in 2009, that number 154 much lower. That is according to figures from the Dutch Association of Banks. Most of the victims were hit by phishing, but in some cases, the fraud caused by malware.
However, the victims were, on average, for less money duped; where they in 2010 an average 7086 euro lost, was that in the first half of 2011 “only” 4632 euro. That is a decrease of over a third. As a whole, increased the damage caused by phishing, however, where banks in the whole of 2010 was 9.8 million is lost due to phishing, is that in the first half of 2011 increased to 11.2 million euros. The damage caused by skimmen, the copying of bank cards, also increased. In the whole of 2010 was 19.7 million euro, but in the first half of 2011 was already 14.8 million euro damage. Credit card fraud took off, of 12.6 million euro loss in 2010 to 4.7 million euro in the first half of this year.
