The use of precautions against malware threats by Dutch internet users has decreased in 2011, notes the University of Twente. Young people would be ‘too lax’ and older people are not skilled enough. Also is a digital generation gap.

Dutch internet users, was installed in 2011 less virus scanners, firewalls, spam filters, pop-up blockers and anti-spyware than in 2010. Also they changed their passwords hardly. This is evident from the trend report on Computer and Internet use 2011, that professor Jan van Dijk of the University of Twente together with engineer Alexander van Deursen fielded, commissioned by Digivaardig & Digibewust. Van Dijk calls the decline “very risky”. He suspects that the decline is because programs security more and more take over. “Young people are being lax and naive, and over-55s do not enough skills to take the right protective measures.”

Also, Marjolijn Bonthuis, of the program Digivaardig & Digibewust, is worried about the decline of the measures, especially for older and younger Dutch people take to safely browse the internet. “It is striking that the young internet generation, so poor scores in this area and does not seem to think as the help goes,” says Bonthuis. According to its benefit to attackers of the laxity and incompetence. Recently found statistics that in 2010 almost all Dutch internet users anti-virus software used.

A group of 30 percent of the Dutch internet not or sporadically used threatens in addition, the boat to be missed in the digitization of the society. The part of the Dutch population that the internet is not used is less than 10 percent, but according to research from the University of Twente is going to have a hard core of non-users’ that can not be quickly reduced.

“In addition, there is a group of 20 to 25 percent that the internet is only occasionally used, for example, in order to check e-mail or to the train times. Because society is rapidly digitizes threaten these people to crochet and will soon be devoid to stay relevant government information, benefits and development opportunities”, adus Van Dijk.

According to him, benefit young people and brings more of the possibilities that the internet has to offer than the elderly and low-skilled workers. According to him, is there even a ‘significant digital gebruikerskloof’ to develop between the various layers of the population: “33 percent of the young people, for example, seek and find on the internet if they have a medical ailment, compared to 22 percent of the 55+-ers, that more benefit would have.”

Finally, according to the report, the average daily internet use with 24 minutes gone up to 3 hours and 6 minutes. Students should average itself is 3 hours and 54 minutes on internet. Of all users is 4 per cent now every day from home online and 14 percent on a weekly basis. The differences between men and women are almost gone.
