Developer builds open-source colorimeter

A Linux developer has released an open – source colorimeter built. The device would not only be faster than the most commercially offered colorimeters, but the so-called Colorhug is also cheaper.

Developer Richard Hughes has announced that he and his creation ColorHug an alternative to the existing colorimeters on the market. The ColorHug, consisting of a sensor and additional software, is built on the basis of open-source software and hardware, and works only for monitors.

Both the design and the software is under the GPLv2 license download. According to Hughes, who already have some years working on the integration of color profiles in Linux, the ColorHug, making it the first colorimeter on the market that is completely open source.

Currently, the ColorHug software only under Linux, though it is in the colorimeter, a Linux Live-CD included so the installation of Linux is not required. The product would be to calibrate just 80 seconds on the basis of four hundred samples of an lcd or led screen, an icc color profile to put together, while a number of commercial products three to five minutes to a color profile. In addition, the ColorHug is significantly cheaper; Hughes mentions a price of 60 pounds, the equivalent of some 70 euros.

Although the ColorHug produced icc profiles in Windows and OS X are useful, Hughski, the start-up of Hughes that the colorimeter on the market, still no drivers for these operating systems announced. In addition, the ColorHug in the first instance in a limited edition on the market, but the first series would have already been sold out.
