Creative-patent slows down the release of source code Doom 3 engine

A patent of Creative that is very similar to the Carmack’s Reverse-schaduwtechniek, the open-source release of the Doom 3 engine. John Carmack is new code to write to the release of the source code is still possible.

John Carmack reported in early november that the source code of id Tech 4, the game engine of Doom 3, which was ready to be published after the approval of the lawyers. The technical director of id Software twitters that the code of the then innovative schaduwtechniek because patents are not revealed, and that he replacement code is going to write for the open-source release of the game engine.

The schaduwtechniek in question is in 1999 by Creative Labs-staff William Bilodeau and Michael Songy invented and patented. By the stencil buffer of the graphics chip to use, it can be determined whether there is shadow volumes behind an object rendered must be. John Carmack discovered independently a similar approach and applied it in Doom 3, so the ‘depth fail’method known as Carmack’s Reverse. This method, however, would too much resemble the patent of Creative.

The patent from Creative Labs caused in 2004, all problems when Doom 3 was still in the shops had come. Id Software closed when a deal with Creative for EAX audio technology in the game in exchange for not having to pay licentiegelden. This avoided not only a possible long term lawsuit, but was, according to Carmack preferable to another, but lower-performing variant of the schaduwtechniek.
