Plex media center appears for Google TV

The Plex-mediacentersoftware is also available for the Google TV platform. The client will appear in the Android Market for devices that are updated to Google TV 2.0. The client contains nearly all the functionality of the Android version.

The developers behind Plex have announced that the Plex client for Google TV devices that have been updated to version 2.0. Plex is a fork of XBMC, and was originally developed for Mac OS X. The Google TV-port is based on the Android-client of Plex and contains almost all the functionality of the mediacentersoftware.

Playback of transcoded streams is the most important feature of Plex that are not yet in the Google TV version is included. According to the developers this is due to Google TV’s lack of support of the HLS protocol. The Plex Media Server back-end HLS to transcoded content to stream to Plex clients. The Plex developers want this functionality build in, but call it lack until that time, no big problem. Local networks have sufficient bandwidth to stream hd content, and Google TV supports various codecs and mediacontainers.
