Cisco has a module for applying hardware-based encryption on its ISR G2 routers announced. The module can ip-traffic through vpn tunnels with various encryption algorithms to be encrypted.
According to Cisco can VPN Internal Service Module works with so-called “Suite B” algorithms. These encryption algorithms by the NSA approved for encrypting data traffic with the American ministry for Defence. In addition to aes, a system administrator can also choose from include des and triple-des. In addition, it supports the module, the hardware to calculate and verify the sha-2 algorithms.
Cisco states that the encryptiemodule thanks to its multi-core processor on a Cisco router from the 3900-series of up to three thousand encrypted vpn tunnels, and can handle a total throughput of 1.2 Gbps, three times faster than the vpn connections via ipsec. The map does not yet support multicast encryption, but the netwerkfabrikant does not exclude that this feature in the future still will be added to the firmware. The retail price for the versleutelingsmodule, that with all the variants of the ISR G2 routers is to use, starts at $ 2000.
