China builds supercomputer with its own Shenwei cpus

China has made its first supercomputer, which runs on 8704 in their own country developed ShenWei processors, put into operation. The brand new supercomputer would be enough powerful to be able to run in the top of the world.

The rekenmonster, Sunway BlueLight MPP as a name has been given, in september, installed in the National Center for Supercomputing in the city of Jinan, located in Shandong province. The Sunway supercomputer consists of 8704 ShenWei SW1600 processors. This risc-cpu’s are made by the company ShenWei produced, and each have sixteen cores. The clock speed is 1,1 GHz.

The Sunway supercomputer, which consists of 34 super nodes with a total of 150TB of memory and 2PB of storage, would be good for a maximum computing power of one petaflop. The systems are water-cooled. Thus know the Chinese rekenmonster a position in the top 20 fastest supercomputers to conquer.

Experts from the United States are surprised by the computing power of the Chinese cluster, reports The New York Times. Although the ShenWei SW1600 processors a few generations behind on the cpu architectures of Intel and AMD, it appears the Chinese are catching up rapidly. According to one analyst achieves the Sunway supercomputer, with a theoretical maximum computational speed that 74 per cent of the Jaguar supercomputer, currently the fastest computer cluster in the United States. Furthermore, it is relatively low energy consumption notable; the Chinese supercomputer would be about 1 megawatt power, while the Us system is almost twice that consumed.

The American government is now the first plans to the end of the decade a supercomputer with a performance of one exaflop to introduce. Although the feasibility of such a computing power is doubtful, it would be the Chinese basic design sufficient scale in time, these speeds.
