ARM: new Mali-T658 gpu is ten times as powerful as Mali-400

ARM has Mali T658 gpu announced a new gpu design that is ten times as powerful as the current top model, the Mali 400. The T658 can have up to eight graphics cores exist and has support for DirectX 11.

The T658 gpu, just like the T604, which the company a year ago announced, use of the Midgard architecture. The Mali 400, the current top model, which is used in Samsung’s Exynos-soc, is based on the Utgard architecture. The biggest difference is that Utgard separate pixel and vertex pipelines, while Midgard is a new architecture that ARM ‘tri-pipe’ baptized. Each shadercore has a texture unit and a number of alu’s, four in the case of the T658.

The T658 can have up to eight of these shadercores be bundled, two times as much as the T604. Also the number of alu’s compared to the T604 doubled. In a version with eight cores would be the new gpu is ten times as powerful as the Mali 400 and four times as powerful as the T604. Absolute numbers are about the computing power of the T658 will give POOR not, but given the fact that the T604 with half the number of shadercores and the half of the number of alu’s all 68GFlops, must 250GFlops for the T658 within reach. What computing power means that the T658 similar to a GT 530, Nvidia.

The T658 has support for DirectX 11, OpenCL 1.1, OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenVG 1.1. Fujitsu, Samsung and LG have already committed the gpu design to use. When the gpu back will be found in devices, and it is not yet known, but this is presumably only in 2013.
