The developers of the X Window System, known from the X11-displayserver have the first idea lwa n about the possible successor ‘X 12’ described. At the same time recognize the creators that the current architecture of X11 is out of date.
In a posting on X.org allows developer Edward Cullen that the architecture of X11 has been corrected. As used X11 a model with a simple frame buffer and proceeds from a client-server model, while modern systems are considerably faster and more complex displayserver to use. In addition, there are in the course of the years, in addition to traditional desktop pc’s and more product types have come onto the market, such as smartphones and tablets. Cullen says that X11 is not set and so does not suffice anymore.
To X11, among other things, in a lot of Linux distros as the displayserver is used, can be replaced, there will be work should be to a successor. The first contours of ‘X 12’ by Cullen outlined, but a concrete start for the creation of a successor of X11 is not there yet. However, it must X12 on multiple devices, can run to be a success, says Cullen.
By the long silence surrounding the legacy X11, there are also other initiatives arise. Probably the most promising is Wayland, an OpenGL-based displayserver. Among others, Canonical, well-known from Ubuntu, and Fedora, have joined this project a success. The question, then, is whether the X12 initiative actually of the ground will come.
