Netcraft: the web counts more than half a billion sites

From recent statistics it appears that the web more than half a billion active hostnames, a five-fold increase compared to five years ago. The most popular web server remains Apache; Microsoft IIS ends on the second spot.

This is evident from the monthly survey of webanalyst Netcraft. In total, the web at the time of the measurement 504.082.040 active hostnames, approximately 18 million more than the previous month. That are not all active sites; that number is about 175.000.000 pieces are much lower.

The web server Apache is still by far the most popular, with a market share of 64,67 percent. Then follows Microsoft; Internet Information Server is good for a share of 15.66 percent. The web server nginx occupies the third place. When looking at the share of web servers at active websites, then the relationships are different. Apache delivers what and nginx creeps close to Microsoft.

In november 2006, Netcraft know that the web is the frontier of a hundred million sites, was passed, which means that the total number of sites in the past five years increased fivefold.
