Icann will time zone database hosting

The Icann has decided to the Olson database, in which the time zones to be tracked, to host. The organization says in addition to the database to defend should Icann be sued for auteursrechtenschendingen.

The Olson database contains time zone information that is used for a variety of applications, including Unix, OS X-, Linux – and Java-applications. Also, websites make use of the Time Zone and Daylight Saving Time Database, which through a ftp server is offered, but under pressure from the American publisher Astrolabe took owner David Olson the Olson database offline. According to Astrolabe, contained the database of copyrighted information which the company publishes in The ACS Atlas. Time – and location-based services, however, came in the problems due to the lack of time zone information.

In the meantime, Icann decided to use the Olson database host. This has the internet corporation to own say done at the request of the Internet Engineering Task Force. According to the IETF would be the elimination of the free information available from the Olson database lead to numerous problems, such as the scheduling of international conference calls.

Icann would also have the Olson database to defend, if Astrolabe the internet corporation sue. Or the American company is actually to the right will take steps, is not clear yet, but Astrolabe is claiming that for the Olson database royalties to be paid.
