Violence in the United States: The summer of the decision

After the death of two Black and five white police officers, Many fear a civil war. In Dallas, however, the people unite in pain and want to give the murder a sense, reported by Ines Pohl.

The air is flickering lights on the flashing Police. It’s after eight o’clock in the evening, but in the summer it cools down in the center of Dallas at night. As would have been the stifling heat of the day in the Asphalt and concrete eaten.

Even 24 hours ago, everything was different. As the city in Texas was mainly due to the eponymous television series famous. It was thought to the disgust of J. R. Ewing, or the matriarch, Miss Ellie, to Oil and money. If at all.

Sadness in Dallas

Frustration and anger

Marcus Carter is sitting with his buddies on a small Pedestal directly in front of a yellow barrier tape, behind the yellow cones stand in the green Grass. Whenever a tram passes, raises fist angrily in the air. He wears a white T-Shirt with the slogan “Black Lives Matter, Dallas”.

“We are tired, we are sick of all the racism. If something doesn’t change, will change the evil.“ A threat with every SIP louder. The police officers remain calm. Not sure that Marcus Carter and his friends stumble on to the tracks when a train passes by. Their Gestures Express respect, even if the Levy are the exact opposite.

Videos on the Internet as proof

In the end of the week, two young Black men by white police had been shot within 48 hours, officials at routine checks. First in Louisiana, then in Minnesota. Not least due to the Videos circulating on the Internet and the murders show, it came across the country to an Outcry and large demonstrations. Also in Dallas.

Here, as in many other cities, the activist group called “Black Lives Matter”. At first, everything was very peaceful. White, Black, immigrants from South America and Asia marched together on the streets of Dallas. Suddenly, shots fell apart, the mass of stob.

Long into the next Morning, it was unclear what exactly had happened. Only that five police officers had been shot. Now you know that a single perpetrator had holed up in a building, to killing to. Just before the police killed him through the use of a robot, he told an official that he had come to shoot people. Especially White. Media reports that he had served as a soldier in Afghanistan, but the army was fired because he harassed female soldiers sexually.

Spontaneous memorial in Dallas

A spontaneous memorial

Mike Walton stands in front of the police headquarters and overlooking the small square in front of the entrance. There are two police cars. They are barely discernible under the mountains of flowers and notes on the messages to the relatives of the murdered policeman are written on it: good wishes, many prayers, some children’s drawings. Balloons in the national colors waving in the hot winds, on the floor, candles flickering. It is a spontaneous memorial, to sing of the people from all over the Region make the pilgrimage to pray, to cry and to be silent.

“It will never be the same again as it once was,” says Mike Walton. He rubs his eyes. Maybe he wants to wipe the sweat out of them, maybe the tears. “And nevertheless, we must continue in this way, according to the common Ways.”

For a quarter of a century, he works as a police officer in Dallas. He has developed as a trade Union representative, the de-escalation strategy of the local police. Was proud that it came out in comparison to the same big cities so rare to clashes between the civil population and the police. “We have paid particular attention to the fact that we always work in mixed Teams. The violence between white police officers and Black is a big Problem.“

A country-wide Problem

A Problem that the United States does not get a grip on. And the raises this summer, the big question is, in which direction the country will develop. “We must not let hatred and anger,” says Dorris Kenny. The African-American lives since 40 years in the area. She is also proud that their city has a lot to do it right. On a good way, with the challenges of an immigration society has not to deal, to ignore racism, but to find a way to deal with it.

And she Worries that could change all of that now. Here in Dallas, but also in the Rest of the country. “There are politicians who fuel the racist feelings still, this is dangerous, and we must not let that happen.” Ultimately, the issue in the coming elections exactly this question, which way America wants to go. “We want to continue to work hard, that America can be a home for all, or a dangerous race to start a war?”

The people pray together

The people believe themselves to pray spontaneously on the hands. In long lines and small circles, the Young and the Old together, which obviously come from different countries and continents, black hands reach into White, in this Moment of pain, the grief, the anger, play the skin color or social Status has no role.

Like so many others, Beth Harrington, who came with her daughter Kylie, and her son, Camron, was in these hours the one desire: the death of police officers is not in vain. “You have sacrificed your life for this is exactly, that we are now here together and unites us not hate each other, but now for a common future.”

In the evening Thunderstorms. It cools down a bit. A small breather this summer, in a country choose which direction it is taking.
