Arrived, but not recognized

Germany is their home, but recognized a lot of do not feel. A new study shows how ethnic Turkish people about Religion and Integration thinking. With very mixed results. From Berlin, Daniel Fur.

Some statements of the study, the authors offers even yourself. 90 percent of respondents people with Turkish roots in Germany are happy in Germany. 87 percent say: We are connected with Germany closely or very closely. In the case of Turkey, there are two percent less.

“We did not expect that,” says Detlef Pollack, spokesman of the cluster of excellence “Religion and politics” at the University of Münster. Some 1,200 immigrants from Turkey and their children interviewed in a public opinion research Institute on behalf of the University.

More positive view than those in the East

The study “Integration and Religion from the point of view of Turkey origin,” contains more Surprises. In some ways, the majority of the respondents estimated the situation in Germany is still better than many Germans themselves.

The authors of the study:
Prof. Dr. Detlef Pollack, Olaf Müller and Dr. Gergely Rosta (to v. l.)

“If one compares the Germany of Turkish origin, with the Eastern feel of the East Germans in the Federal Republic of much unjust treated as the Turkey-born,” said Pollack during the presentation of the study in Berlin.

But happy people with Turkish roots are – in the jargon “Turkey – born -. 54 percent agree with the statement: “no Matter how I try, I will not be recognized as part of German society”.

Too little of Turkish origin, the heads of

No Surprise for Gökay Sofuoğlu, Chairman of the Turkish community in Germany (TGD). His Association represents around 200 Turkish organizations in Germany.

“The results of the study coincide with the observations I make on a daily basis,” Sofuoğlu in the DW-interview. Rejection and discrimination – for many Turkish inhabitants was the part of everyday life in Germany. Also, the career is still hard. “If you look at the city administrations, public services, or schools -, Turkey-born people in leadership positions are still very rare,” says Sofuoğlu .

Also, the researchers from Münster recommend that: More attention for the special situation of the Turkish people.

“The message to the majority of society must be that you is not going to be born sensitive to the problems of Turkey. At the same time, one must also see that many of Turkish origin in Germany feel very comfortable,” says sociologist of Religion Pollack.

Half of all respondents think that Islam is the only true Religion.

TGD-Chef Gökay Sofuoğlu looks at both sides in the duty. More respect for the Turkish language, Religion and communal voting rights for all who live here for a long time – these are his claims on the German state. Also the Turkish people and their organisations to make from his point of view homework. “The Turkish associations to bring more, more loyalty to the German state and the German Constitution to show,” Sofuoğlu

Willingness to violence is questionable

Because of the lack of recognition has consequences: “In our eyes, this feeling of lack of recognition is expressed by the fact that you defend Islam strongly,” says University Professor Pollack. Half of all respondents think that Islam is the only true Religion. Almost half of the study participants says: It is follow important religious laws as a state. 36 percent believe that only Islam is able to solve the problems of the present. 7% believe violence is justified to spread Islam.

“You have to be sober: It is remarkable, how high is the acceptance of Violence is,” says study author Pollack. “This is, of course, they also did a soundboard for violence,” says the researcher. Against the Fundamentalism you recommend classic recipes: education, good knowledge of German, work – and a lot of contact with Non-Muslims.
