Comment: The enthemmte center?

A study suggests that the political centre of the Federal Republic of Germany tend more and more to extremist positions. However, the survey has some basic weaknesses, writes Kersten Knipp.

There is hardly a statistical survey, whose methodology would not be criticized or even questioned. This also applies to the so-called “middle studies”, the University of Leipzig created in the two-year – rhythm with the market and social research Institute USUMA Berlin. Political scientists criticize about, the question of whether to lump or even suggestive. The just-released “mid-study” in the spring of 2016 allows for a certain interpretation of the game space. But can’t mask A part of the German population tends to be extreme right-wing positions.

Approximately 8.5 percent of the Germans agree with the Thesis that national socialism also had its good sides. Almost 11 percent are of the view that the influence of the Jews was still too big. And 12 percent believe that the Germans are other peoples “naturally superior”.

So far, So depressing. Especially since other data from the extreme attitudes of witnesses: 6.7 percent to keep the dictatorship “under the circumstances,” for the better form of government than democracy. And 10.6 percent want a “leader” who ruled in Germany “for the benefit of all with a strong Hand”.

Unclear questions

And yet – no – one must ask, what have these thought of nearly seven percent when the term “leader”. They had Adolf Hitler in the sense that this term is historically related? Or the term for a lot of people now has a more General meaning similar to the English term “leader”? And what do you mean, he may govern the country “with a strong Hand”? One thinks of a violent ruler? Or the naive but understandable desire to speak of it merely, it may in a democracy, sometimes even a little bit faster?

DW-author Kersten Knipp

Also, the formulation, and Germany need is “one big party”, the “people’s community embodies as a whole”. The 25 per cent, the share this point of view, think it is really up to unit parties, which played in the history of the country the right and to the left a disastrous role? Or not the swings in the term, the idea of the Grand coalition that ruled the country in fact, for years? The study works with a remarkably imprecise questions. Who responds to your questions, not a concepts, their historical and political complexity is him, perhaps not fully aware. You must make the authors of the “mid-study” to the charge.

But that changes, of course, nothing in my mind that Germany has a far-right Problem. The NSU-process shows it, as well as the growing number of attacks on asylum accommodation.

Relation to the Muslims

Harden has also the relationship of many Germans to the Muslims “Muslims immigration should be prohibited to Germany under”: This sentence agreed with about 41 percent of the respondents. Two years ago, there were almost 37 percent. But the answer is really a “devaluation of Muslims” as the authors of the study mean? Or might not to put specific Worries behind?

The same time, the appearance of the “mid-study” published by the Demoscopic Institute Allensbach, a study of the political assessments, Worries and hope of the Germans. According to the survey, 32 percent of respondents in June, the number of refugees is “deeply concerned”. In January, there were still 48 percent. The Confidence that the government was seeking to pay intensely in order to reduce the Refugee to take since the beginning of the year continuously: from 15 percent in January to 38 percent in June. But this also means: Over 60 percent of respondents do not believe this. “The majority criticized the refugee policy of the government,” writes Allensbach Director Renate Köcher in the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” from the 15.06.2016.

Two surveys, two results point in the same direction. However, although the percent of points that differ only slightly from each other, talk to the authors of the Leipzig study of a “devaluation” of Muslims, the allensbach by the immigration triggered “concern”. Whether the centre of the “disinhibited” or just “worried” is: to decide This, possibly also with the political temper of those who not only collect data but also to interpret.
