Gato Barbieri, a pioneer of Latin Jazz, died

The jazz musician and film music composer Leonardo “Gato” Barbieri is dead. A wide audience he was with his film music for “The last Tango in Paris”.

The Argentine musician died at the age of 83 years in New York due to pneumonia. This was announced by his wife, Laura.

The tenor saxophonist first established himself in the Free Jazz avant-garde, and later he brought in a strengthened Latin American and afro-Brazilian music in the Jazz. For his haunting music for Bernardo Bertolucci’s Film “last Tango in Paris” was Barbieri 1973 awarded with a Grammy. The erotic Drama with Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider in the main film of the 1970s was rolling to a cult.

Barbieri was on 28. November 1932 in Argentina’s Rosario, was born. Between 1967 and 1982, the musician released 35 albums. He began his career in the 1950s as a saxophonist in the Clubs of Buenos Aires.
