Sydney’s landmarks in the dark

A prelude to climate protection: The lighting of the Opera house and the harbour bridge in Sydney has been turned off on the occasion of the tenth “Earth Hour” temporarily. Other striking buildings anywhere in the world to follow.

The idea of symbolic action for climate protection went out in 2007 by the Australian metropolis of Sydney. This year, more than 170 countries and more than 7000 cities wanted to participate. “From a city, the action grew to 178 countries and territories,” said Earth Hour Manager Siddharth. “We could not appreciate happier that millions of people come together for climate protection.”

200 German cities

Every evening at 20.30 PM local time, should go out in the participating cities for an hour of the lights. For Earth Hour, the environmental organisation WWF called on. In Germany, more than 200 cities, said according to the WWF, their participation. Also at many well-known buildings such as the Brandenburg gate in Berlin, at New York’s Empire State Building or the Taj Mahal in India, the lights should go out. In December, the international community at the UN climate change conference in Paris agreed on a comprehensive climate change agreement.
