Cinematographer Douglas Slocombe is dead

The British cameraman filmed once the German Invasion of Poland. Later, it was Slocombe through his collaboration with Steven Spielberg famous. Now, he died at the age of 103 years.

Douglas Slocombe is in his home town of London, in a hospital, dead, like his daughter Georgina announced. He had his career as a freelance Journalist and photographer started. 1939 was Slocombe as a photographer for a magazine in Poland, shortly before German troops in the neighboring country attacked.

Even temporarily by the Gestapo arrested, he managed, nevertheless, to Warsaw to travel. There, he filmed the 1. September under the protection of the Polish army, the German invasion. About the Baltic States, he managed to then escape to Sweden.

Three Times nominated for an Oscar, three BAFTAS won

After the war, worked Slocombe at some British classic films of the 1940s and 1950s with, among others, with actor Alec Guinness. In the 1960s, he was for the cinematography of the 2003 neuverfilmten classic “The Italian Job” (dt.: “Charlie is dusty million”). Three Times he was nominated for an Oscar. The prestigious British film Award BAFTA won Slocombe three Times, including in 1974 for “The Great Gatsby” (The great Gatsby).

As he is almost 70 years old, it chose US Director Steven Spielberg as Director of photography for three films of his “Indiana Jones”series. Also in the James Bond Film “never say never” with Sean Connery was Slocombe for the camera responsible.
