“WD combines 128GB ssd with 4TB hdd and pci-e interface”

Western Digital has a hybrid drive is shown in which a hard drive of 4TB is combined with a 128GB ssd. The prototype of the hybrid drive uses a pci-e 2.0 x2 interface through the sata express connector.

The hybrid test of WD is on show at the CES booth of the company. Despite the use of a pci-e 2.0 x2 interface limited the used JMicron sata-600 controller the maximum data throughput of up to around 550MB/s. By two hybrid drives in a raid 0 array to combine throughput of approximately 1GB/s.

According to Anandtech, the ssd and the hard disk as separate storage volumes to approach. WD would still work on a mechanism whereby 128GB-ssd for cachingdoeleinden is to use. It is still unclear whether and if so when WD hybrid drives on the basis of the prototype on the market. Also, it is conceivable that Western Digital finally choose for a native pci-e extensively, so that higher speeds are possible.
