“Samsung shows new uhd tvs with quantum dots”

Samsung has at CES in Las Vegas new uhd televisions will be shown which use a backlight with quantum dots. As a result, the new uhd models a higher maximum brightness and can they have a larger color gamut display.

The new models with quantum dots by Samsung ‘suhd tvs’. Competitor Sony was already using a backlight with quantum dots in the Triluminos models and LG makes some 2015 tvs using this technique. The top model from Samsung, the JS9500, has a curved screen and uses a direct led backlight with local dimming. Samsung did not want to lose the number of individual zones of the backlight, but was told that per screen measurement is different and that there are ‘hundreds’.

Also the slightly cheaper, and also bent JS9000 model uses quantum dots, but with an edge-lit panel. According to Samsung, almost half of all the company sold uhd tvs, curved screen, and the expectation is that the share of curved tvs will continue to grow in 2015. The Korean manufacturer will also provide a flat model of uhdtv, the JS8500, with quantum dots and an edge-lit panel, but the direct-led with local dimming will only be available on the curved uhdtv’s. The new models will be available from the second quarter.

Televisions with quantum dots to use blue leds in the backlight in which red and green light is generated by a part of the blue light using a quantum dot film to convert. This allows the backlight to a more favourable spectrum of color, creating color filters can be used for more light to pass through. That, in turn, has a beneficial effect on the maximum brightness and the energy consumption of the televisions.

Samsung said that its suhd tvs are able to complete the dci color gamut, which is used in all digital cinemas. Content that makes use of this greater color range is currently only available for cinemas. Samsung did, however, know that there is working hard on a way to content with the larger dci color gamut available to consumers. How and when this type of content will be available is not yet clear.

Samsung also announced that all 2015 models of televisions are equipped with will be of the Tizen open-source operating system, that in the more expensive models will run on an unspecified octacore-soc. Thanks to two new Evolution kits, one for hd and one for uhd models, some older models can be upgraded to 2015 specifications including the Tizen os.
