PayPal: Android app with nfc comes only in 2012 to Europe

PayPal is working on a new version of its Android application that allows users via near field communication payment. Because of the lack of devices with nfc, will PayPal this time being not in Europe offer.

PayPal has over the years in his own words, ” a substantial growth in the number of mobile payments that are the 100 million users annually. For this year expected the mobile-payment platform the border of 3 billion dollar to break through to revenue from mobile payments in 2013 that would be all 7.5 billion dollars, expected PayPal.

PayPal already has a mobile application for iOS, Android, Symbian and Blackberry OS and will within a few months a new version of its Android application release. This new application will enable users to make payments through near field communication. In the USA, see the company this possibility by lack of nfc devices as a pilot, leaving for Europe in the short term, no plans.

“With the new Android application, people can easily make a payment through the phone together,” says Laura Chambers, Senior Director PayPal Mobile, against Tweakers.net. Via the application on the phone, a user can indicate that he or she wants money to transfer, then the receiver determines to be by the phones with the back against each other. The recipient must then take the receipt of the payment confirmation.

“The new Android version will be out sometime in the coming weeks will be available for U.s. users,” said Chambers. In Europe, the function will only be available if there are more devices with nfc. “We are reluctant with nfc due to the lack of phones with nfc. We see this therefore as a pilot.”

According to PayPal, is the lack of phones with nfc is also the reason not to go with nfc in Europe to start. Expected this can take some time also. Supplier NXP has indicated that they think because of the lack of demand for nfc chips by manufacturers, no 100 million nfc chips to be delivered this year, but only 35 million. “A lot of new phones get nfc, so we expect that this year-capable phones will grow significantly. Because we still need to test, we expect next year also with nfc in Europe to start,” said Chambers.

Google has itself a mobile-payment service on nfc, built for its Android operating system; with Wallet can Us users to use their smartphones to pay for it. The service is currently only limited available, but Google wants to expand this. In this respect, complained to PayPal, along with eBay, Google because trade secrets would be stolen.
