Wants to on Sunday with the Opposition to speak: The UN special envoy Staffan de Mistura

For days, there is a dispute about who the Syrian Opposition in Syria-the summit should represent. In the afternoon, had the UN special envoy Staffan de Mistura at the place in Geneva already in initial discussions. With him table sat but only representatives of the Syrian government delegation. At the same time, said the main Syrian opposition group, the High Verhandlungsrat (HNC), yet in the peace negotiations for the Bürgerkriegsland participate to want. In the Turkish capital Istanbul, said their spokesman Ahmed Ramadan, the arrival of a Delegation in Switzerland was on Saturday.

The representatives of the HNC want, however, only participate in the negotiations, if their conditions are met. This includes a stop to the attacks on civilians, an end to the blockades of Syrian cities, and other relief supplies. Only when these humanitarian issues have been resolved, could the political discussions begin. In a political process with the government will be HNC but not directly participate. De Mistura said he believes that on Sunday with delegates from the Opposition to speak.

Support from Ankara

Backing his claims, gets the HNC by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This explained on Friday against the television stations CNN Türk, it would be difficult for moderate opposition groups, without a truce, of an end to the war to speak of. In particular, the sustained bombing of rebel-held areas by Russia is a significant Problem. Russia is fighting in the civil war on the side of the government of Bashar al-Assad. The Turkish government is an opponent of Assad.

The editorial recommends

After five years of civil war, violence and extreme brutality in Syria, there are virtually no moderate forces in the conflict, said the foreign Minister. He is so clearly against the demands of Russia. (24.01.2016)

Really want to none of the groups in the Syriengesprächen in Geneva to talk to each other, but the Situation forces all parties to the conflict to the table. A significant role is played here by the international mediators. (23.01.2016)

The Meeting in Geneva is the third attempt in four years ongoing civil war in Syria is a political solution. Recently held in the beginning of 2014, a summit instead. On the weekend are initially indirect rounds of talks are planned, in which de Mistura individually with the various parties to the talks. This first Phase is likely in the opinion of the UN special envoy for two to three weeks to complete and is supposed to be a “genuine ceasefire”. Then should then be the formation of a Transitional government to be discussed. Since the outbreak of the war in 2011 in Syria, more than 250,000 people have been killed. 4.6 million Syrians are, according to UN figures fled abroad.
