Uv-laser optical storage improve

Researchers have developed a new type of laser developed, with which the datadichtheid of optical media can be increased. The goal is to lwa nte and small, ultraviolet lasers would be optical communication can accelerate.

According to the group of researchers in the Riverside Bourns College of Engineering, part of the university of California, is the current implementation of uv lasers suitable for a wide deployment of the technology. The lasers would be too large, expensive and inefficient on a large scale to be used for data storage and optical communication. The new lasers, by the team led by Jianlin Liu were developed, these shortcomings however, have not.

Liu and his team made use of zinc oxide in place of gallium nitride as basic material for the uv lasers. With the help of antimony doped nanodraden of zinc oxide, the team p-type semiconductors, n-type zinc oxide were combined to laser diodes. The lasers are still in the prototype stage; for a commercial application, the stability of the p-type material and the service life extended.

The smaller, cheaper nanodraad-lasers could be used in data storage and communication. By the shorter wavelength of ultraviolet radiation would be the capacity of a dvd is doubled to tripled. In addition, the uv-lasers application in optical communication and infrared lasers can be replaced. Medical applications are not excluded.
