The introduction of Nvidia’s next generation gpu’s and video cards would be delayed. The Kepler gpus, which according to a smaller lithographic proced lwa to be made, would not, according to the plans can be delivered.

The successor of the current gpu’s from the stable of Nvidia carry the code name Kepler, and would in the second half of 2011 should be produced according to the original roadmaps. The production partner of Nvidia, TSMC, however, would be difficulties in the transition to a smaller production process: the so-called yields, or the working chips per wafer, would be disappointing. Furthermore, the performance of the 28nm-produced chips less than expected, reports Digitimes, sources at videokaartfabrikanten bases.

According to the Nvidia ceo Huang Jen-hsun has to follow his company is still in the proposed roadmap: in late 2011 the 28nm Kepler gpu’s appear. According to the videokaartfabrikanten would Nvidia also the roadmap for the next generation, Maxwell, have adapted. Those chips would not be in 2013, but only in 2014, to appear. Both successors of the current (40 nm)-generation there would be significant improvements in the performance per watt should exhibit.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company not only makes chips for Nvidia, but also has Qualcomm and AMD as a customer. The 28nm products for AMD, the next generation of graphics cards, codenamed Southern Islands, are planned for the first half of 2012. Also the next-generation Fusion chips for the Brazos platform, 28nm-successors of Zacate and Ontario with the code names Krishna and Wichita, until 2012, to appear.

Qualcomm has, however, for the next generation soc’s for smartphones, the so-called Krait architecture, still before the end of 2011 in the schedule. Perhaps the yields and performance of TSMC’s 28nm process for Qualcomm’s products will be acceptable, or are the claims about delays is grossly exaggerated.
