Two companies from The Hague to tell about the development of applications for the lora network. Lora is a protocol for the ‘internet-of-things’. In the Netherlands and Belgium lwa are nationwide lora-networks were constructed and more and more companies are working on applications, such as tracking.

Two companies from The Hague: Other Use and Dutch Coast, have devised an application to children to track at the beach of Scheveningen by making use of two protocols, namely bluetooth low energy and lora through the Miffy-piles on the beach.

With the fast growing number of antennas for LoRaWAN, or lora, in the Netherlands and abroad is increasingly interesting to use the lora protocol various control devices. LoRaWAN stands for Long Range Wide Area Network and is a network protocol that as little energy as possible to ask of the devices that are connected to the base stations. A base station, depending on the location, to reach over a distance of sometimes more than fifteen kilometers. So that is ideal for applications that occasionally a small piece of information to the internet.

At this time, a lora-access point still quite expensive, around one thousand to 1500 euros, but it is likely to change rapidly. In several Dutch and Belgian cities are already such networks, for example, The Things Network. But both KPN in the Netherlands and Proximus, and Wireless Things in Belgium will soon be nationwide lora-networks. Nationwide networks for some applications practical, especially if the tracking goes. There are only three lora-stations need to have loads and such to be able to track with an accuracy of a few tens of meters.

The network is there, but the applications will be so also worked. We spoke about it with the companies in the Hague and Other Use and Dutch Coast. They tell how their application came about and what ideas and plans even more. Among other things, will be discussed why lora for their project is more convenient than the ‘competing’ protocol Sigfox, where the tracking system all can use and how beginners get started.
