Boeing is developing a laser cannon to automatic unmanned flying devices from the air to shoot. The laser cannon is among other things meant to be private lwa drones that are in the way flying out of the sky to shoot.
The air and space tested the laser cannon this week in New Mexico in the United States. Due to the increasing use of drones, it is becoming fuller in the air. This reduces the chance of accidents. Therefore, several firms are trying to find ways to use drones to fend off or from the atmosphere, writes Wired. Boeing chose a way with a precision laser.
The system is not large, and lights up easily a hole in the hull of an unmanned airplane. The infraroodlaser of 2 kilowatts had not more than two seconds on full power necessary to make a hole to burn in a test specimen. The laser cannon is mounted in a cardan-suspended system and is on top of a tripod. Then, the machine is quickly ready to shoot. The big advantage of a laser is that there is practically no delay between the moment of firing and the time of arriving at the goal.
The laser is controlled with an Xbox 360 controller and a laptop with some local richtsoftware. If the target is in sight, the system can take over from the human driver, after which the device is purpose beyond self. The laser can be a target, hit it with a margin of a few inches. What is the electro-optical device should cost, is not yet known, but a spokesman for Boeing says: “once you have, it will cost you some electricity.” With only a few moving parts, thinks the concern that the antidrone-laseropstelling the long time it will endure.
Unfortunately, the device does not Star Wars sounds, but there is a plan for adding audio, especially to the operators to let them know that something is happening.
