Who wrote, remained

The saying ‘he who writes, remains” since the rise of the internet in the recycle bin. The web has no eternal value, and the internet generation new ways must be found to be heroes to remember.

Until roughly a decade and a half ago was simple: who published, knew his name for eternity fixed. Books, newspapers, magazines: in the worst case, you work by the Royal Library in The Hague filed, and who it was, knew his writings in the public library and in ten – or hundreds of thousands of homes saved. Since the advent of the internet, all that is different. Who now writes, exists until the next harddiskcrash or in the best case, as long as the server space is paid for.

The end of paper as an information medium has been often announced. So it was a long time in each project, the cripple, or even completely terminate the flow of paper promised, but that never happened really: companies printing still everything loose and stuck, preferably in triplicate. The pair of hapless bureaucrats that have a thermal printer were foist, let all the prints just a second time, but with real ink, and more than one accounting package bears the nickname ‘The Tree Killer’. Paper doesn’t crash and you don’t have each day a copy of.

What the ict is not managed, seem to be the newspapers now have to enforce. The time-honored quality newspapers have decided that the news coverage on the internet directly competitive and thus they have heavy calibre in its own foot shot. Fast, to only authenticated case-insensitive strings on popular onderwerpjes set the tone. If all the research is done, it seems that nowadays more and more often by tv producers to be carried out – and there does the newspaper than like a piece of about. Declining oplagecijfers are the natural result: if the newspapers on the old, labour-intensive foot were moved on, they may have also become smaller, but they had, in any case, have an independent right to exist. In the past the newspaper a gentleman, nowadays is the Tokkie of the right that even as an opinion disguised prejudices about the fence blèrt – and that the internet can be better and cheaper. All you can in the internet, again no fish packaging.

“But Rataplan, where do you look?”, I hear you all ask, “If T. net-editor-in-chief, would you however should be happy as a competitor himself the tie on?” Well, yes and no. Of course, I lie not awake of if the news coverage via the internet chopped of the newspaper, the internet is simply the better medium to conduct business quickly with the readers. That investigative journalism is becoming less common is, however, less well; not only the newspapers, but all journalists are less and less taken seriously. If even an institute like the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad writes that a certain crime will be punished with three years in France (where can I sign up?) then you need to determine that that lack of respect is earned. Paper as a news medium is, according to me then also not able to save.

What I much worse, is that all of the good that do on the internet is just as fleeting as the memes and the hype where the medium of great. You can have such thorough articles produce, on a good day going to pull the plug out and then it’s gone. And then, there are no newspapers anymore you can frame it, no books that you have in the closet, no magazines with a nice cover story that you subtly to the attention of your visitors by placing them strategically on the reading table… I actually think I now need to explain what a reading is: this is a type of analog Surface-based computer that is compatible with postmen and libraries. Which, again, virtual, instrument.

Recently I stood in the Florentine Santa Croce church for the tomb of Dante Alighieri, and I was overwhelmed by grief. ‘t Is not that the thing not nice is that, you know, all across the what schrilletjes against the spectacular tomb of Michelangelo, niches away – it is that a writer of the twenty-first century as a tribute, not get will, and that I someone knew that a memorial earned.

We, the internet generation, our own monuments have to make. I am to the altar, walked and have a candle lit in his memory Tweakers.net-editor-in-chief Yoeri Lauwers, who on July 8, 2008 passed away and who in my life has a much larger role to play than Dante and Diego and Danziger together. I’m not religious, but occasionally I get the coolness of a small church and then I think a minute to Yoeri, and I burn a candle. There he asked ever, and I repeat that question now to you, reader. I hope, spread across the planet, small flames, and the thought of him alive; every time one goes out, flickers somewhere else a light on, or maybe two. And then is but a temporary little monument, as fleeting as the medium where Yoeri heart and soul to have worked: the reminder is there. And that no one is us.
