A group of scientists has a fairly striking correlation between electric cars and the temperature in cities. They have calculated that replacing regular cars by their electric version in a city like Beijing the temperature by a degree can reduce.

The survey was conducted by Chinese scientists who were looking at the heat production of electric cars compared to regular cars: which is only a fifth. The effect of this is noticeable in cities with lots of traffic. The so-called urban heat island effect, the phenomenon that in the city warmer than rural areas, could be significantly reduced by all the ordinary cars to be replaced by electric cars. And so that must contribute to combating climate change.

But there is also a second effect that the scientists have studied. Because of the decrease in heat production with the use of electric cars is therefore less hot in the cities, and have inhabitants of their air conditioning less often. According to calculations, the in a city like Beijing or to a degree less hot as there are only electric cars are used. And that delivers an energy saving of 14,44 GWh, or 14,44 million kWh. Therefore, there is less CO2 and that is good for the environment. And of course it is also nice for the energy bill.

With the results want scientists to contribute to the discussion around electric cars. Although cars that run on electricity are less polluting emissions, they are vervuilender in the production than ordinary cars. As a result, the contribution of electric cars is still controversial. The Chinese research shows so see that there are additional positive effects are to be taken into account.

Although the study is an interesting perspective for the use of electric cars should also be noted that the mathematical calculations with their associated uncertainty. In practice, there may be more factors that have an effect on urban heat and air-conditioning. It is so necessary to the established theory in the practice to validate it.
