This weekend was the national finals of MSI’s MOA held: one Belgian team and three Dutch went to the Tweakers.net-HQ to see who will have the honor of the Benelux in the European final in Germany would be allowed to go defend.
Organization
MSI organised just like last year, a large overklokwedstrijd that they have the MSI Master Overclocking Arena, or MOA, called. By land take a number of contestants compete against each other, to a place to earn in the 2nd round, which in Germany is held. The sixteen teams that continue to Germany to compete then for a ticket to Beijing, where they, with American and Asian overclockers will measure in the final. In Beijing, it will be twenty teams fighting out who is the best overclocker in the world.
Preliminaries
The four region finalists that their overklokkunsten at Tweakers.net showed, were selected from submissions on Belgian forums and our own GoT. In order to qualify, had a high score with the benchmark program Super PI to put down: the challenge in this respect is the number pi as fast as possible to count to one million decimal places behind the comma. To do this, moving the teams, without exception, Intel’s E8600 cpu from the cabinet and klokten this up to a whopping 6.5 GHz, and in the benchmark times of approximately 7 seconds were dropped.
Regiofinale
The three Dutch teams, Snot_Aap & Viss, diezel & pascalhaegens, Gendo & Wava and the Belgian duo Massman and pt1t qualified for the region finals. Here they were given the command not only a as soon as possible time for Super PI to put down, but this time also had the video card be pressured using 3DMark01. The overclockers were provided with a X58 system with a i7 920 processor and all other hardware. Of course, there was liquid nitrogen in place for the chips to keep them cool during the overklokpogingen.
Preparation
For the overclockers to start, it was first a reference score to be put down. The system on which all participants could have consisted of the following hardware:
Core i7 920 D0
MSI Eclipe SLI
MSI NVidia GeForce GTX285 OC
3x 2GB OCZ 12800 1600MHz ddr3 memory
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W
Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B
As the operating system was Windows XP SP2 chosen and this was with standard hardware a score for Super PI / mod1.5 XS of 15,360 seconds, though. The system put in the game-test of 3DMark01 SE score of 53.847 3D marks down. The overclockers would these scores improve, with the highest percentage overkloks or scoreverbeteringen the measure would form.
During the build arches Snot_Aap and massman is about the graphics card in an attempt a voltmod for the GTX285. After a few tries with the soldering iron if this is, however, unfortunately to no avail: the video cards would be on standard voltages, overclocked should be. What after the failed voltmod attempt was was hardly a card to call, so that the first victim was a fact.
Super PI
Depending on the strategy was the hardware carefully investigated by the teams, to see if the hardware was stable and what could be reached with nothing more than air cooling. First of all, the 920 processor up clocked: by default, it runs a Core i7 processor at 2.66 GHz using a baseclock of 133MHz and a multiplier of 20x. Soon it was time for the real work and were the circuit boards, insulated against condensation, so that the LN2 pots installed. Soon it appeared that it is not the processor, but the motherboard would be a limiting role went to play. To the clock speed increase had the baseclock of the cpu can be increased.
The teams searched desperately for ways to make the baseclock above the 200MHz to get, to combine this with a maximum multiplier of 21x and so above the 4GHz to rise. The systems were, however, this in not all cases: where some teams against the 230MHz were others not above 210MHz. Especially between Gendo & Wava and Massman & pt1t pitched the idea: both teams knew the 4.8 GHz on spots and as a PI-score of 8,375 second down to convert. The joint performance of the video card and the cpu in 3DMark would be the deciding factor is going to give: the other teams could get their scores with Super PI still jacking up with a good 3DMark score.
3DMark01
Unfortunately could Snot_Aap and Viss no 3DMark score drop, and had, therefore, with the stock scores: a pity, because their PI run was with 8,703 second, although not the fastest, but fast enough to be in the running to continue. For the 3DMark01 test, it all became a bit more complicated, because both the video card overclocked, as the cpu, both of which are stable had to be during the benchmark. There was also severe in los tweaked, to make the lod settings of 3DMark01 so as to affect that there is a higher score could be reached.
Diezel & Pascalhaegens put up a respectable score with an overclocked cpu and default geklokte gpu down, but that was not enough to make the two front runners to catch up. The battle for a place in the German final would be a Belgian-Dutch tête-à-tête. Since the Belgian team and Gendo & Wava identical Super PI scores had, would the 3DMark score will determine the winner. Eventually knew Gendo and Wava with 93.278 points the highest score to drop. The cpu turned on 4608MHz and the gpu, the shaders and the memory of the GTX285 turned respectively on 765MHz, 1380MHz and 1575MHz. Massman and pt1t had to overclock their cpu quite a rollback, leaving the score at 85.176 points remained stuck. Diezel and PascalHaegens followed them on the foot with 83.397 points and as I said knew Snot_Aap and Viss due to software problems, not score to put down.
The overclock of Gendo & Wava proved too strong: they convert the best 3DMark score down. By the shared fastest Super PI 1M score and the highest 3DMark01 score to put down to qualify Gendo and Wava for the European qualification round, which in Germany is held. There, they chance to qualify for the grand final, in Beijing, China, will be held. Congratulations and success in Germany, gentlemen!
