E3: Highlights 13 June – Microsoft reveals Kinect

Microsoft hired Cirque du Soleil to Project Natal to rename it to Kinect. The show was wonderful, but left many questions unanswered. Hopefully, the answers are still in the second personferentie.

It is clever of Microsoft, a million-dollar press conference that leaves the audience with more questions than answers. Microsoft focused the attention on himself by the press on Sunday night to invite them for a show around the device that until now only as ‘project’ started. It hired the Canadian Cirque du Soleil in a show to develop in which the name of the thing was revealed. And strangely enough, the also. After a show of more than an hour we knew we were really only that the device is now called Kinect to the man. We still don’t know how much the thing costs, nor when the sale is, points which for months is speculation.

What do we know then, however, after the spectacular show from Sunday night? At the E3 of 2009 we have of the existence of Kinect heard. Since that time, we also know that the system is suitable for playing casual games, the sort of games that Nintendo holds a patent and that the Wii has grown. The big question is, since whether the technique is suitable for playing hardcore games: shooting games, action games, fighting games, racing games, sports games, the type games in which it comes to the skill of the player to the reaction rate.

That question was not answered. As the spectacular show of Cirque du Soleil, something made clear, was that the Microsoft Kinect as a device for the whole family, such as the Nintendo Wii to the man trying to bring. Without also only one name left Microsoft a whole series of games, all played by the ideal family of father, mother, son and daughter, a cozy home on the couch. Spectacle enough, because the living room was a number of times on its head, with the family coolly on the bench remained seated, playing and. Or the moments that made it clear that you online can play, by someone across the ceiling in the living room.

Spectacle enough in the room. There, but on the tv screen, unfortunately, less. Microsoft had great games, but the big question remained unanswered. No Gears of War with Kinect, no Fifa with Kinect, no Devil May Cry, Kinect and Fable III with Kinect. Oddly enough it was Peter Molyneux who showed that Kinect is more than just a camera and the built-in microphone also interesting possibilities results. Molyneux was a year ago, with the introduction of the technique, the great visionary and seems to be still a crying in the wilderness. After all, the microphone was almost completely ignored, as until now almost always in demonstrations of the technique. And when the microphone was being used that is the same as for the first really new feature that Microsoft showed: Video Chat. You can have friends from your list to search through in Minority Report-style menu to browse and then a beeldgesprek start. A nice feature, but of course less spectacular.

Indentation

What did Microsoft show? A game in which a rubber boat on a wild river is sailed, and where the boat by the movement of the body can be controlled. More fun was when the boat changed in a cart on a track in an old mine. Also, the cart could with the body to be controlled, but along the way there were many obstacles that had to be circumvented by at the right time to step aside. There were also obstacles that the hand from the sky had to be beaten. The best part however, was that a second player could indent, to it seemed, at any moment, and the boat or cart, so with two players could be controlled. That in and out of extra players came little back. In the other games, players could just take turns playing, such as in the unnamed football game in which players with their avatar field to enter.

The game that most of the hands on each other was a Star Wars game that is also unnamed remained. Might the father of the family let off steam with an imaginary lightsaber. The game still had the most away from Red Steel 2, not happen to a nicer, more adult game for the Wii.

Questions

So it remained a night in which many unanswered questions remained, the price and launch date, obviously, but also whether there is really only familiegames for Kinect are going to appear. There it appeared in the Cirque du Soleil show, though, apparently, Microsoft wants the system in the first instance, that way to the man. However, there will be yet more challenging games on the market, even if it was only Fable III, one of the trendsetters in the introduction of the system, a year ago. Microsoft gives a second press conference, on Monday morning Us time; maybe there’s more questions to be answered. Provisionally put Microsoft Kinect as an alternative for the Wii that left little to the machine, Nintendo add. That is a pity because the system is promising, then, is that of the Japanese competitor.
