Apple iOS 5 has limited support for WebGL. According to the company, only developers of the advertising platform access to the possibilities of hardware acceleration of 3d images using javascript.

To a question about the status of WebGL support for iOS 5 on the forum of Khronos, replies Chris Marrin, a member of the Webkit team at Apple, that “WebGL is not publicly available in iOS 5′. He adds that only iAd-developers have access to WebGL capabilities to the operating system.

It is unclear why WebGL only for the advertising platform of Apple is used in iOS 5. Might want the manufacturer to start testing in a separate, more controlled environment. Apple supports WebGL still does not have a finalversie of Safari, but it’s in a beta and the underlying engine of the browser, Webkit, supports the 3d technology for browsers for some time already in a nightly build. Versions of Google Chrome, Firefox, and Opera support WebGL. Last week, Microsoft announced beveiligingsbezwaren against WebGL.
