The spacecraft New Horizons which is on its way to Pluto contains the same MIPS-cpu and the cpu that in the first PlayStation, Sony was to be found. It is a space suited made MIPS R3000 processor.

The MIPS R3000 cpu, a 32bits risc processor, came in 1988 on the market and is widely used in all kinds of electronics. The cpu is under the other will be processed in the first PlayStation console from Sony. There turned the processor at a clock speed of 33MHz. One of the characteristics is the limited instruction set, a feature that by some programmers as ‘elegant’ is defined.

The processordesign of R3000 is also in the taste cases with NASA. The processor is in a special space, purpose-built implementation in the spacecraft New Horizons placed. The probe is on the point of to the planet Pluto.

The custom processor, called Mongoose-V and is built by the company Synova. The clock speed is reduced to 12MHz and a special cover layer, the cpu protect against cosmic radiation.
