With Luna Display you can now use a Mac wired as a second screen

Years ago, Apple had the so-called Target Display Mode for the iMac, among other things. With that, you could use an iMac as an external display for another Mac, simply by connecting the two with a cable. Since the arrival of the Retina iMacs, that is no longer possible and macOS Mojave and newer no longer support the function. Luna Display, an accessory and software that allows you to use an iPad or Mac as a second screen, now brings the function back.

Luna Display 4.5: Mac now also wired as a second screen

Since October 2019, Luna Display already supports an old Mac as a second screen thanks to the special Mac-to-Mac mode. But that only worked over a Wi-Fi network, which can be inconvenient if the network has limited capacity or if there is no network available at all. This has been resolved in the latest version of Luna Display (version 4.5). From now on you can also connect two Macs via Ethernet or Thunderbolt.

In the settings you can indicate which connection method you prefer (only wifi, only ethernet, only Thunderbolt or any possible connection method). The wired connection works between all Macs, but you may need additional adapters. You also need the Luna adapter, which costs $ 99. IMacs still only work for non-Retina models, but the company would consider support for 4K and 5K.

In the latest version, some other features have also been improved. The Luna app now also shows the battery percentage of the second connected device (such as an iPad or MacBook) and Retina support for M1 Macs has been improved. The software should also work better with the iPad Air 2020.
